Chapter Eleven
"Hi," Ruth greeted the old man behind the counter of the flower shop. He was the same man who had interviewed her the day before.
"Hey, it's Ruth, right? Lemme run back here and get Anthony, he came in today, just to talk to you," the man told her, smiling.
Ruth waiting, looking around at all the bundles of flowers set around the room. There were buckets of fresh cut flowers, vases of bouquets, pots of continuous bloomers, interspersed with gift items and pricing signs.
"Ruth?" Another man came from the back room, this one with dark, slicked back hair and a white t shirt smeared with green and brown.
Ruth held out her hand for him to shake. "Nice to meet you. Anthony?" She confirmed.
"Yeah, that's me. So you're looking so start a job here, is that right?" He asked.
Ruth nodded. "Yes, sir, I need a job sort of in a hurry and I've worked with flowers before, so I thought this would be a good place to apply. Plus, I thought I might actually have a reasonable shot here."
There was no need to elaborate on what she meant by that comment. He nodded with a knowing expression and pressed his lips together. "State o' the world, eh?" He said, smiling to break the tension, "So when could you start, Ruth?"
A flood of relief rushed over her as she answered. "I could start right now if you want me to," she told him excitedly.
He laughed at her enthusiasm and pulled an apron from behind the counter. "Alright, then," he said, handing it to her, "Welcome to the team!"

It didn't endanger his job because the manager didn't seem to care, but it did make his work day a little more difficult than it needed to be.
Everything had gone fine for the first half hour or so. Stephen had gotten there on time, the manager had shown him the ropes of how they did things like stocking shelves and ringing up orders, cleaning and organizing sales tickets. Then Stephen's partner, Robin, had come in and the second he met Robin's eyes, he could tell they weren't going to be friends.
"Hey, I'm Stephen," he introduced himself.
"Robin," the boy responded without embellishment.
As soon as the manager walked away, Robin glared at Stephen and said, "I think it's a disgrace to see a white man walking down the street holding the hand of a black woman."
Stephen bit the inside of his mouth to keep from saying anything out of turn. Robin may have been his equal on the pay scale, but he was the owner's nephew, so he was probably given more privilege than Stephen would be, as far as running off at the mouth was concerned.
When Stephen didn't respond, half of Robin's mouth drew up into a sneer. "That just
